EEG is an abbreviation for electroencephlogram, which is an electrical recording of activity in the brain.  Neurologists are trained to identify unusual patterns of abnormalities.  In some cases the abnormal patterns can be readily categorized as specific disorders such as epilepsy.  In other cases the EEG abnormalities may be more subtle, but can still provide your physician with important information in managing a medical problem, such as the following.

 

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that usually results in people having seizures. When a person has a seizure, it can simply mean they experience a change in sensation, awareness or behavior. Although seizures may look different, all epileptic seizures occur due to a sudden change in how the cells of the brain send electrical signals to each other.

 

Behavioral & Development Disorders

Behavioral and development disorder patients, such as those with autism, Asperger's Syndrom and Fragile X, may have abnormal EEGs.  A child's physician may order an EEG test to determine this.  Identifying an abnormal EEG can be important information for a physician in managing the patient's treatment.  Having an abnormal EEG does not necessarily mean the child is having seizures or will be diagnosed with epilepsy.
